Insulin resistance (IR) is a condition in which body cells become less sensitive to the glucose-lowering effects of the hormone insulin. In most cases in humans, normal blood levels of insulin become inadequate to keep blood glucose within a normal range. Not all cell types require insulin to absorb glucose, but the major groups which do include fat and muscle cells. The liver does not require insulin to absorb glucose, but responds to insulin by reducing glucose output.
